He was also very much humbled by the events of the first Avengers movie, as Iron Man 3 explored. By the end of Iron Man 3, he not only seemed like a different Tony Stark, he also hinted that he was no longer Iron Man.
First scene of Age of Ultron, the first time we have seen him in almost 2 years, he's back in action as Iron Man.
Age of Ultron completely ignored Tony Stark's character development.

Then you misread the ending of IM3. The ending of that film is that TONY STARK IS IRON MAN, which is why he destroys the multiple clones of his armor. He's losing his humanity to the suit. This fell in perfectly with the ending of Iron Man 3, as well as his struggles with the Chturi Invasion. He's still obsessed with that horrible moment. It drives his decisions in the first half of this film (and all of IM3).
