Like Sparkplug said, I remember reading an article by Peace stating that he catches them a couple hundred feet down at night. Sets live hardtails at several different depths with glow sticks on them. I've also heard you better pack a lunch if you hook into a decent fish as they are considered by most as the pound for pound fightingest fish in the ocean.
Large squid are awesome bait, too. LED lights work better than glow sticks, at least from what I've experienced. Not trying to discredit you. you can also insert a glow stick inside a squid and have an LED light, up on the Bimini or Australian braid, where the sampo snap swivel is. Those huge eyes, that they have, are better suited for light attraction than chum, so to speak.
I agree.. Pound for pound, there is no stronger and meaner fish I've ever caught. Other billfish can't hold a candle to a swordfish.
I also recommend a hand harpoon, or at least a flying gaff when trying to boat a big one. I've lost big ones that we had on a 18' leader while trying to throw a harpoon at it, because it refused to get close to the boat. They normally don't give up like a marlin, where you can put a motor in gear and plane the fish to the surface cause they are exhausted. Swords fight until the end.

How are you rigging them sparkplug? Uni to Uni with braid and 20' fluoro? Or gotta go bimini twist on this?
