I think many of the Germans from that time are still living are like many of the Japanese from that era, they're only remorse is that they lost the war, but harder to grasp for me is the significant number of Jews that assisted the Germans in their "final solution," triaging, segregating, and even assisting in executions

They were living in a world of shite after WWI. They had lost their since of self-respect and were being shite on by the victors. Imagine yourself wondering where you were going to get your next meal... how you were going to feed your children. Then some guy comes in and throws off the chains of oppression and reinstills your sense of national pride.
Most of them were probably aware of what was going on but would rather ignore it as long as they thought they were going to be OK.
