US ships taking that route did have embark security from naval expeditionary forces. Don't know if we laxed on this due to the budget cuts. But if same policy as a few years ago then we would be hearing much more if Iran fired on a us cargo ship under the protection of embark secueity. usual load out is 4 .50 cals mounted forward and aft with two m240s roaming. Plus COG's usually have a M30. Those boats Iran usually had out there are more for annoyance and would get shredded if provoked.
