Let's say you rear end Joe Blow and he's not buckled in. His injuries might be more severe than if he had worn his seatbelt. Insurance pays out more. Courts get clogged up. yadda yadda yadda. Not to even mention Joe Blow becoming a projectile in a major accident.

ETA: Not defending the checkpoints. I think those are BS. Just defending seatbelt law reasoning.

That's actually a decent argument. I'm pretty sure that in that situation, Joe Blow is at partial fault because he wasn't following the law, but if you take the law away that might not be the case aka what you said.
