That's very true. The difference between times isn't linear. By that, I mean that running a 49 compared to a 50 isn't nearly as impressive as running a 46 compared to a 47. Or a 48 compared to a 49 for that matter.
And yes, I agree that a 49 would get you a place on most D1 teams (if you wanted it), but I'll argue all day that not only would it not get you a full scholarship, it wouldn't get you a half scholarship or even a quarter one, depending on the school.

I agree at LSU a 49 won't get you any money, just a spot on the team, running at home meets, and a chance to improve over a few years and maybe qualify for the SEC meet.
However, I've seen guys running 49 in HS get (some) money from the SLU's, Southern, Tulane, Northwestern St., etc. of the track world.
