I think an interesting statistic is only roughly 30% of American olympic medalists have medaled @ junior Olympic competitions.
Some of them never competed, but what I take from that is that the majority of junior champs are beneficiaries of early maturation.

Yep, especially in sports like many track and field events where at lower levels and ages someone can dominate just off physical ability and being bigger and more mature than everyone else.
