ok....I obviously missed that....but again, I'm not a big fan. But the music was still basic, predictable pop....or is that part of his act too?

Supposed to be kind of leisure suit larry lounge singer stuff that, if you dig into it, is surprisingly complex and interesting underneath the surface.
Sort of a paen to hedonism. I haven't listened to his second album as much as his first, but the first is the story of his character, Father John Misty, moving out to Laurel Canyon and getting involved and sucked into all sorts of debauchery and basically having a mental breakdown/crisis of faith as he explores the dark side of Hollywood.

Honestly, if that is truly your assessment of his music, then I don't think that you are "getting it."

Eh...That's a stretch. I think he's a good songwriter and his lyrics are anything but predictable.
