I agree with you here. Cruise ship is for cruisers, it's not a very good way to experience Alaska.

Is there one area I should concentrate on (or avoid) during that time of the year or anything specifically you think we should do? We are both young (mid to late 20s) and in decent shape. We enjoy hiking but probably wouldn't want to do any actually mountain climbing. Also kayaks, fishing and other adventures are welcome.
ETA: Time is 7ish days (June 1 - 8 probably), and budget (excluding airfare) is probably somewhere in the $2500 range.
