Why is eveything in a vacuum?

Oh Asik sucks! -- have you seen some of the other NBA centers?

Oh we have no depth! -- have you watched this team the past few years? Watched some of the other teams?

Oh AD has regressed defensively one on one! -- when? Let's understand the best offensive players > the best defensive players. They are going to score. AD wins more one in ones defensively than a lot of players. His mere presence deters offensive possessions.

These critical, ambiguous "eye test" observations are getting ridiculous. Check the data. Look around the league. You would think this is the worst team in the league based on these Pels talk hot takes

I agree with your vacuum comment. Yes, AD could "improve" as an on ball defender against guards on the pick and roll. And yes he has room to improve his overall on ball defense.

Now back to reality....the guy making him look bad at times is a guard who will likely be the MVP. Davis will probably also make 2nd Team All Defense Team this year. Yes, I really want him to play better on defense and I want the Pelicans to win the series. But I'm not that worried about his on ball defense at this point in his career and there are less than 10 (really 5, maybe only 2 or 3) power forwards in the league who would do a better job on defense in the is series than AD right now.

Where did I isolate this series? Asik doesn't suck, nor did I say he did. I said he's not as good as he was in the past few years, which is a fact.

AD's on ball defense is still good, but has dropped off. Blocked shots and altered shots are great, but in most cases are coming off his great help defense.

I think some people simply overvalue AD's defense. He's an amazing player, but he's not as good on defense as some like to believe, and there is a real team issue with defense that has perpetuated for 4 years now.

But yeah, it's just some of us using the "eye test". :

Dan Patrick sometimes makes the point that people tend to make absolute pronouncements in sports ignoring context and specific situations.
