Watching the highlights of Blakeney and it seems he's great in transition, creating his shot, and penetrating and dishing to open teammates. Maybe him in a 3 guard system that allows him and TQ to both handle the rock (Blakeney in transition, TQ in Half court sets) would be successful (in fact I like a platoon system where two pg style guys on the floor would be successful.) I think the following lineup would allow the team to press and create the style of up tempo (and free wheeling) play that maybe JJ wants to run:

Starters
G-Blakeney
G-Hornsby
G-Quarterman
F-Simmons
F-Victor

Reserves

G-Gray
G-Patterson
G-Sampson
F-Epps
C-Robinson

F-Bridgewater
C-Malone

That's a twelve man rotation where we would be deep enough to press and wreck havoc. It also gives us shooters on the wing with both sets (Hornsby, Blakeney, Patterson, Sampson) Thoughts?

The reason we recruit combo guards is so anyone can take the ball down the court in transition. We won't have a transition PG and a half-court PG...

I'm still not sure we will have enough post depth to full court press for 40 minutes, but we will continue to play fast, fluid, and try and get into open court situations.

That being said, I think your lineup is exactly how I envision it right now. We will lose some height playing with 3 guards, but I'm okay with it. We should be able to stretch the court with shooters and open up some inside work for Victor and Simmons. Obviously Simmons can move outside at times as well and try to take a less fluid moving forward off the dribble.

No, because Malik Newman is coming to play PG.

Quarterman is our PG. He's going to be an NBA guard himself one day.

You don't think Newman will sign with LSU?

So we will have 3 excellent players who can direct the offense...

Don't buy this... theoretical line-up posted goes:
6'6 TQ
6'4 Blakeney
6'4 Hornsby
6'10 Simmons
6'9 Victor

That's more size than you'd think. Followed by:
6'1 Gray
6'0 Patterson
6'4 Sampson
6'9 Epps
7'1 ER3
7'0 Darcy
6'5 Bridgwater

I'd argue that is in the top 5% of size in college basketball. Big guards thus more ball pressure and smaller passing lanes make getting the ball inside efficiently a problem.

Edit: Bridge at 4, Victor at 5 are the only two guys undersized for their position in terms of Pro Level (and non TQ at SF) ... in terms of college, only Bridge is even undersized for the 4. Everyone else makes sense or is bigger.

Thoughts?

Why play Blakeney at PG on this roster?

TQ showed last year that LSU's offense was at it's most efficient with him being the primary ball-handler

Gray (yes him) can still be a good PG for this team if he's willing to run the offense instead of create the offense. He's still LSU's quickest ball-handler who can beat anyone off the dribble.

Patterson can play effectively at both the 1 and 2 spots.

Simmons' best trait is his ability to handle and pass the basketball. We will see times where he is the "de facto" PG.

Let Blakeney do what he does best, score. This team has plenty of guys who can run the point.

There's no need to press. Maybe a little full court pickup like Florida or Louisville, but not an all out press. Also, the press is only as good as the guys trying to execute it. 2 years ago it was effective because Hickey was a great "free safety" and Coleman was excellent at setting the trap on the first pass. Even though LSU ran the same press, it wasn't nearly as effective last season. Why? Martin was not Coleman and LSU had no ball hawk like Hickey

Very true. It's nice that we have tall guards. Not many teams will bring out the 6'9" SF's but some will.

I feel like this roster is best suited for a 3 guard set. Stretch the floor and allow slashing into the lane.

I agree that we will play a lot of 3 and maybe 4 guard line ups. We need big improvements from Epps, Robinson and Malone. Bridgewater has skills, just needs to be in great shape to help overcome being undersized. Gray showed his value in games against really quick teams, if he can just make better decisions with the ball. A good point guard takes what the defense gives them and at times can force his will on the defense. Gray just needs to learn when is the appropriate time to do each.

Blakeney is 100 percent a pure shooting guard. Simmons and quarterman will run point for this team. Keith and Tone can spread out the defense for Simmons to slam and Q to slam the lanes and pop out a quick pass if they crash. We are stacked offensively next season. Could see a lot of high scores.

I am buying. Upvote from me.

I think JJ wants to run and get out and let players create. That why we get tired in last 7 minutes of games and things look chaotic in set offenses. With Simmons having the ability to bring it up its a match up nightmare for teams.

I think Newman would actually fit in this system even better and still get everyone 20 minutes. He can bring it down or run and get to his spot. Plus you can only imagine all of our small guys can take to hole and yolk on anybody. That would be a site to see.

What's nice is that we'll have a de facto 1 with the length and slashing skills of a 3, and a de facto 3 with the court vision and passing ability of a 1.

Throw in a ton of athleticism and scoring ability from the other guards, and it's gonna be pretty damn fun to watch.

i mean its not bad, but we are starting a SF at the 4, and a PF at the 5. It will work, but not exactly ideal.

having to 7 footers that are basically just warm bodies at this point doesn't exactly make me excited about our size.

I also think the idea of a center is old fashioned. Not necessary at all in college basketball and really not necessary in NBA either. Long, more athletic PF's are the future of post play in basketball.
