What brand hard drive? If it's a Seagate, download Seatools for DOS, create a bootable disc, and run the Long Test. If it's not a Seagate, it won't let you run the test. Great tool for Seagate drives and much better than chkdsk.

Every major drive manufacturer has a downloadable test suite of some sort. I wouldn't waste a huge amount of time on it though or you might wind up paying the tech more than a new computer would cost.
