So maybe the assignment was "write about something you wish for"?
I would have said (if I remember correctly to an early age) : "I wish I could see a cubs game" or "I wish I could play pro football"

Absolutely not. Reading the article, there's nothing underminded about it. She knows a lot of her students are underprivileged and she's wanting them to feel safe enough to share. Kids won't share their story until they feel they are in a safe spot.

"I wish my teacher knew..."
She a 3rd year teacher and says 92% of her students qualify for reduced or free lunches.
3rd grade is a crucial time of learning (for the kids) why waste a lesson plan on such BS?
