For Windows, you can't go wrong with the Surface line.
Surface 3: $499
Surface Pro 3: $799
For OSX, I'd avoid the MacBook Air for now. Their screens are from 2010 and just don't cut it anymore. If you want a MacBook, I'd go with a MacBook Pro refurbished. The 2014 models with the Haswell chips are as fast as the 2015 models with the Boardwell chips. Broadwell doesn't really offer any noticeable benefit at this time (even battery life is similar).
