No...Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings were both departures from their previous efforts.

I'll take that one step further. Rust in piece was the pivot album where the band moved from great thrash albums to knowing how to write catchy riffs.

From that album on, the band became focused on writing songs and the thrash stuff only entered here and there.

For metallica, learning how to write a good rock song is what ruined their legacy. Their early stuff had so much momentum and drive that anything less than a perfect 10 of an album seemed like a letdown... For megadeth it was the complete opposite. I look at megadeths earlier stuff and see it as immature and chris poland's/jeff young's work was too sloppy. But as they picked up marty and started writing better songs the band got better. Risk was the beginning of the end both for the momentum of the band and for marty. Just a tired album filled with last ditch efforts to chart a hit on radio stations knowing that metal was all but busted.

Dave ruined himself. Kicked out Ellefson from the band and went through a miserable debacle of a megadeth sideshow with revolving doors of proven musicians coming in and out. A lesson in futility by trying to manufacture albums with experience instead of creativity.

For whatever reason he saw the light and realized what a shithead he was being and got ellefson back along with taking the gamble on a virtuoso guitarist the same way he did with marty and they put out two solid albums with thirteen and super collider. I put both of those albums on equal ground with cryptic writings. Good songs, easy to listen to.

Overall... I would take metallica in the eighties plus all their cover songs and put that against anyones legacy in music. But i think i would still rather listen to megadeth's discography if push came to shove.
