Pantera pretty much kept metal alive during the 90's when Metallica went on their sabbatical. I am glad Metallica have re-found their true roots over the last decade. Pantera still never gets the true respect it deserved. They were that good.
I think many thrash metal, and more importantly extreme metal, fans hated Pantera for "dumbing" down the music by implementing groove into the music. The fact remains that they are one of the most influential groups to ever don the heavy metal banner and helped keep alive the genre in the midst of dark, gloomy music scene dominated by grunge and the alternative scene.
