IMO it was very clear that the "current" Angier went into the tank every night, and that the clone ended up in the spotlight. I know there was a line in the movie where he said something along the lines of "Sometimes I never know if I'm gonna be the one in the tank or the one getting the applause" or whatever. But I always took that as just him describing the mindfrick of knowing that he (the "current" he) knowingly sacrificed himself every time he gave a performance.

This also jives with the theme of the movie.

With that said, Angier is the antagonist as well. Such a great movie.

Isn't that amazing? That we can follow the "good guy" for easily half of the movie only to come around and think at the end that we've been following around and investing in the "bad guy" the whole time? Although, to be fair, it isn't quite that cut and dry, though there is a lot of literal black hat wearing by Angier.

I think you're right, Angier is the villain, but only insofar as his obsession overtakes him and drives him to depths of himself he never would have thought possible (e.g. burying Fallon alive). But never does he lose the sympathy of the audience except at the end. It is a wonderful trick to play by Nolan to imbue the villain with so much pathos at the start and only slowly, decisively reveal the inner demon of the man that makes him a true villain.

I wish Jackman would do more movies with Nolan. He was wonderful in this.

On a side note, I read that Batman was originally offered to Josh Hartnett, but he turned it down because he was afraid of typecasting. Needless to say, he regrets it if for no other reason than he wanted to be in other movies by Nolan, but Nolan tends to work with the same actors over and over again.
