He was the one that actually gave the spiked wine to Robert that lead to his death (on Cersi's behest).

One thing I know is you don't bring back a character after three seasons of not even being mentioned if some serious shite was going down.
Lancel knows that he was a cat's paw in Robert's death. Just killing him off won't be enough. Maybe Jaime finds out about him being a stand in. I dunno.
