I live in Williamsburg. Jamestown and colonia Williamsburg are nice.
Do the naval boat tour...largest naval base in world. there is a carrier in port right now. They cruise by all the ships and explain details about each ship in part

The Williamsburg suggestion is a very good one. I'd spend a day there before driving up to DC.
