Tempe is a suburb of Phoenix, so while it's in the desert, it's not like it's in the middle of nowhere.

I am aware of that. But how often do you see Phoenix listed as a top-10 metro area on any respective list?

It seems to be forgotten in many respects.

Say what you want about the lack of amenities in the Oxfords, Athens, Knoxvilles, Eugenes, Normans, Lincolns, Gainesvilles, and Baton Rouges of the world, but at least they are college towns. In each of those cities, the university occupies the majority of the town's interest.

There are not many highly successful football programs located in major urban centers in this day and age (e.g. SMU, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Houston, etc.). USC is very much the exception.
