With some exceptions (Audubon place, I suppose), I've always considered the gated subdivision somewhat up there on the trashy scale. Means you're not baller enough to keep the hoi poloi at bay without a cheesy collectively owned faux iron electric gate at the entrance to your hood in BFE.
