I know a guy who did this in New Orleans for two full years. There was a car rental place only a few blocks away from his house. It can be surprisingly cheap to rent a car for a weekend.

and i dont have family in the immediate vicinity so im not trying to get to the northshore, or baton rouge etc... for day trips all that frequently.... a couple of random beach trips with friends here and there.
anything substantial, flying makes more sense as i have plenty of points.
really, its pretty rare that i have the need to drive out of town.
