You can actually survive with a fairly significantly diminished liver - most alcoholics, chronic liver disease patients, HCV, etc., do so to a certain degree, anyway.
But, in one of nature's amazing ironies - medical science has advanced to the point where you can survive with no heart, no lungs, no brain, no kidneys, depending on circumstances, but no technology in the world can sustain you if you have no liver.
