Some short memories in here. I feel like it has to be ET just because it crashed the industry.
Most of this board was negative years old when E.T. came out, so not that surprising.

The way sony fricked up Star Wars Galaxies will forever be the most painful fail that affected me as a gamer. I'd still be playing today if it was not raped. Pre CU (combat "upgrade" - lolnope) SWG was the greatest game I have ever played and they killed it.
I agree with most of this. Sony was so stupid with that shite.
Edit: I didn't even like the Jedi update before the combat upgrade. When everyone knew how to become a Jedi it changed the focus of the game IMO. Everyone I know just started grinding to be a Jedi, and it hurt some of the great social interaction that game had.

You whippersnappers don't know your history
If not for the NES, video games may have slid into obscurity. Been just a niche hobby in arcades and computer labs. ET didn't single-handedly kill it, it was the last straw. There were so many atrocious games for Atari that consumers lost all confidence and wouldn't buy anything. By the time 1985 came around, video games were a dirty word. Nintendo couldn't even call it a console. They added a mostly useless robot and the zapper gun and marketed it as an all-around "entertainment system". Which was bullshite, it was a video game console. Were very picky about who they licensed games to, and portrayed games more-or-less accurately on the cover art. They did everything right and pulled it off and saved us. Whew.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was a pretty massive clusterfrick.
A:CM pissed me off more than any other gaming failure in my 30 years of gaming.

Well it did have a lot of other capabilities. They didn't use many in the US but in Japan they actually did have the internet access for the Famicom. It's funny to see how far ahead they were and now their network is way behind

I would say that Nintendo kicking Sony to the curb over naming rights to the CD drive (The PlayStation) and going with Phillips (which never actually produced anything) was probably the biggest failure in gaming by one company. Nintendo Playstation!!! Nintendo might never have lost control of the market and possibly put others out of business.

You guys have probably already mentioned the winners but the delay of releasing/rollout of playstaion 3 has to be on list. PS 2 was pretty dominant and xbox would not have near the market share if they came out at the same time.

Or if it came out cheaper than $600 and they didn't say things like "get a 2nd job to buy it." Essentially they made the mistakes the Microsoft recently made with xbox 1.
