I don't really get into that whole battle because for some reason I just largely ignored it. I don't live in Chicago so I guess I really had no rooting interest either way, but Wrigley Field desperately needed a makeover. And I live in a state that panders to the lowest common denominator when it comes to infrastructure progress, so I really don't mind what the Cubs did to their own park.

That all notwithstanding, how were there no temporary bathrooms? That just doesn't make sense.

I think the Cubs being broadcast nationally on WGN changed the rooftops dramatically over time. 30 years ago it was basically the people that lived in the building. A few dudes with a cooler and lawn chairs. Eventually the buildings started renting out the roof tops, they set up mini bleachers and even sold space to advertisers.
