obviously the top two are yankees/sox and dodgers/giants but where does it rank after those two? does it end up at #3?

When both are good top 2. When one or both suck then nowhere near.

I think most would put it ahead of Dodgers/Giants, if the Cubs would ever be worth a shite then it would definitely be 2.

It is in the discussion for the second best rivalry. The best part about it is that the Cards are so damn unlikable.

1.yankees/sox

2-3 then dodgers/giants or cubs/cards are interchangeable depending on competitive status of one or both clubs.

In spite of all the talk about it yanks/sox has only been consequential a little bit in the last decade of my lifetime.

It is series largely dominated by yankees. Granted, many media are east coast red sox fans tho so they'll turn a bartman story into a red sox reference

dodgers/giants

Mostly regionalized IMO. They haven't both been great at the same time since maybe the Will Clark Giants versus the Lasorda Dodgers.

Cards/Cubs is a surprisingly even series which tells you a lot about it being a rivalry when you consider the relative success of the two teams.

I'd go with Yankees/Sox (though it was so much more fun when they genuinely hated eachother in the early and mid 2000s) and Sox/Rays (they still hate the frick out of eachother).

The Dodgers/Giants to me is easily number 1. I mean that rivalry moved with the teams. Yanks/Red Sox would be 2. The thing that hurts the Cards/Cubs rivalry has been the lack of meaningful games. The few times the Cubs haven't sucked in the last half century or so have been years the Cards weren't good(84,89,98,03,etc.). You could argue the Cards/Reds has been much more heated the last five years than the Cards/Cubs ever has. Proximity is the only reason it is a rivalry.

Is it really even that big of a rivalry? Only one of the two ever wins anything, and unlike the Yanks-Sox used to be, there doesn't seem to be any real hate, seems too friendly. I remember during the 98 home run chase they were really buddy buddy during the McGwire Sosa stuff. I would have Red Sox Yankees and Dodgers Giants ahead of it in terms of long standing rivalries

1. Yankees-Red Sox
2. Giants-Dodgers. I am amazed how many fans on the East Coast, Midwest, & South don't realize how much hate these 2 franchises have for each other. It goes back to the NY days when they were rivals there & continued after they both moved to Cali. Go to a game at AT&T Park to see it first hand. It is intense.
3. Cards-Cubs

I do with #2-3. Very historic.
