What exactly is the difference in the American Legion and the VFW?

Almost anyone can join the Legion (women's auxiliary, son/grandson of legionaires, veterans, etc), but only veterans can join VFW.

Doesn't VFW stand for Veterans of Foreign Wars?

I believe it has to do with cheap beer.

The American Legion anyone can join. You can join as a social member, veteran, auxilary(if female) or as a son of a legioinaire. As a son of a legionaire, you can join under that if your dad, grandfather or great grandfather was a legionaire.
The VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) will only allow you to join if you are a veteran of a foreign war. You had to serve. It is not like the American Legion.

Veteran of domestic wars. Like War on Drugs and such.

Most of these answers are wrong.
American Legion: You must have served on federal active duty during a qualifying period of conflict. The current qualifying period has been ongoing since 1990. The American Legion Auxillary is a women's group and you have to be a qualifying relative of someone who was a member of the American Legion or a deceased member of the Armed Forces.
Veteran's of Foreign Wars: Pretty much the same except that you have to been deployed to a combat zone or hostile area.

AL is a "club". VFW is not.
