According to King's novel, the man in the tuxedo is a multimillionaire playboy by the name of Harry Derwent. The figure in the animal suit is his male lover.
This brief scene is important for several reasons. Firstly, it recalls a moment at the beginning of the film. In this early scene, Danny is examined by a doctor. He lies on his bed, covering his crotch. Behind him is a huge bear shaped pillow. The pillow, or stuffed animal, has the same nose, ears, colour and oval shape as the bear suit, as well as eyes which mirror the elevator floor indicators.
Note that the first time we see Harry Derwent, he is actually lying down exactly as Danny is. But whilst Danny protectively covers his crotch, Derwent has his partner’s face buried in his loins. It is only when Wendy appears that both men sit upright
