And the difference comes from the detergent additive package each brand specifies before the fuel is shipped to the gas station. Sam's, Walmart, Racetrack will use the federal minimum while Top Tier gasoline like Chevron, Shell, and BP will use well above the federal minimum. It costs more to use more additives but then again it's cheaper than relying on buying fuel cleaners and adding them yourself.

For the people who have seen one truck stop at 2 different stations, note that the trailers are usually partitioned and different fuels can be loaded in the same trailer.
