Let me put something else out there, no jimmie rustling....
Lost isn't nearly as popular without the red herrings, crazy theories and dissension. Therefore, the things that lead to the "fricking idiots" complaining are a very necessary part of the fabric of popularity for Lost. Without them, Lost is less interesting, less discussion inducing, less interesting....
However, probably a better and more succinct show. See Fringe

Actually, upon rewatch, it's really not. I still love Fringe, but the board rewatch we just finished up a couple weeks ago showed an awful lot of problems with Fringe. Still a great show, no question, but it's nowhere near Lost (IMO, of course).
