Stress definitely plays a role. A lot of people that have this phobia -- and I'm not sure it accurately describes me -- have chronic nightmares, a fear of dying in their sleep or some traumatic event that took place while they were sleeping (waking up to find your house on fire). I don't have any of those.

I just can't bring myself to go to sleep.
