There are lot of little islands in the Santa Rosa sound you can anchor at if you choose, there is also crab island in the bay between Ft. Walton and Destin.

Be careful in the Santa Rosa Sound and pay close attention to channel markers. It gets really shallow in places that seem like they should be deeper.

Also, if you are entering Destin via the Destin pass, pay close attention there as well to the conditions prior to entering the jetties. An outgoing tide coupled with a stiff south** wind will ruin your day. The waves stack up and are large (8-10' at times).

Not as bad as panama, though. I've had friends leave PC and couldn't clear the waves, resulting in the entire cockpit going underwater, in a 55" boat. Basically, the bow couldn't clear the wave and the boat fell backwards down the wave. It's very rare out of Destin.
