This was my first thought. But, before you take him, give him the biggest steak you can get him, if he'll eat, that is.

Cataracts themselves can be lasered off for a couple thousand dollars, I think. Had a diabetic dog that developed them, was blind as a bat... after the surgery, he was a completely different acting dog. but he was 10, not 17.
