2000 f150 5.4L. Recently ran hot thermostat was stuck. Changed it. New thermostat stuck ran hot again. Took thermostat out drove couple weeks. All good. Then ran hot again. This time with no thermostat in engine! And water in reservoir looks like red mud. Blown head gasket?

How old is that coolant? I started using Rotella red ELC in my F150 and Ranger. The factory LL fill is well past due for a flush in that F150, that muddy color is rust because the corrosion inhibitors have been used up. Not a huge deal but you will have to flush the system and probably have a professional do it to get rid of all the sediment that is now reducing coolant flow and overheating your engine. Don't blame Ford for your lack of preventative maintenance.

honestly, sounds just like a chevy with that new non-toxic antifreeze in it that turns to sludge after 5 years...are you sure ford is not now using something similar?...
