My granddad didnt have a pickup until after his boys were grown. I have many pictures of him with a limit of rabbits laid out on the back of an old Bonneville with 5 or 6 beagles standing in the trunk.

My dad always thought it was funny that when he was growing up, they would just throw the dogs in the trunk, but after Granddad got a pickup with a camper shell, he built a dog box to slide in the bed to put them in.
