50mm is a good starter lens. It is fairly close to what the human eye sees. Here's a relatively inexpensive one that is great for a Nikon DSLR. LINK

That is a FX lens so on a DX camera the 50 mm will be more like 65mm. A 35 DX lens is best for everyday stuff. This is the one I have.
