In all honesty, has the city of Ferguson destroyed itself?

Just curious if anyone thinks life will go back to normal over there. Seems like police will never be able to do their job with the amount of negativity the media is shoving in our face. The citizens seem to protest everyday. And most of the city has burn destroyed by rioters.

What does the OT think?

Shouldn't have any trouble attracting new businesses to come to town

Not without some gentle prodding from your friendly DOJ officials.

Wrong. The citizens aren't protesting. Paid protesters from outside the area are protesting. The citizens hate the attention and quite frankly they hate the Brown family. They know that a straight up thug got shot for attacking a police officer, and the racial spin from the justified shooting has destroyed the town they were once proud to live in.

Make no mistake...Ferguson was one of the better mostly black towns in St. Louis. It was middle class working blacks trying to raise their family in a respectable place.

But of course the thugs win again and their uneducated actions have setback their community so far that it may be too far gone at this point.

Sad.

According to the latest reports something like 70% of all citizens homes have been destroyed within the city limits.

Reports of at least a million people trapped in the Superdome are floating around.

Apparently, the ferguson PD is the problem. They should just pull out and let the citizens take care of themselves.

Let's check back in a year and see how that pans out.

I think it's safe to say they didn't do themselves any favors as far as attracting businesses and new permanent residents. That's much more important in determining their future than police effectiveness IMO, but that will hurt also.

I'm sure there wasn't a lengthy waitlist to move to Ferguson anyway, but whatever they did have to offer has pretty much been cancelled out.

Seriously, who the hell would want to move to Ferguson?

Exactly what do you think was "normal" there?

I don't know how Ferguson even has a police force left. If I worked that city, after the past 6-12 months I would have found a new line of work by now.

I posted it on the political board- Ferguson is in pretty bad shape with their money.

Property Values down 47%-
quote:

with the average home selling for only $22,951 so far in 2015. Another negative indicator: in the eight and a half months leading up to Brown’s death, the average residential square foot in 2014 was selling for $45.82. In the eight and a half months since Brown’s passing, the average residential square foot in the city has sold for $24.11. That’s about a 47 percent downtick in one of real estate’s core indicators.

Increased Expenses (Police OT)
quote:

“The[city’s] response to the unrest, as well as other related matters, has resulted in significant, unanticipated expenditures,” reads the city’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for 2014."

City Manager resigned-
quote:

“The civil unrest also resulted in some lost revenues… At this time, the total impact of this event on the City’s revenues and expenses is not able to be estimated.”

The court fees (which the DOJ said were racist) & property Tax (which have plummeted) make up 37% of the revenue collected by the city.

They need to build large walls to separate the communities, like the Shia and Sunnis have in Iraq. Every morning a mule-drawn cart can be let in to collect the bodies. After about 20 years it would then have cleared up the problem and the walls could be destroyed. problem solved.

By "back to normal" do you mean issuing almost two arrest warrants per year for each person that lives there and having active warrants for 75% of its populace?

To understand some of the distrust of police that has fueled protests in Ferguson, Mo., consider this: In 2013, the municipal court in Ferguson — a city of 21,135 people — issued 32,975 arrest warrants for nonviolent offenses, mostly driving violations.

---Sometimes in reporting a story, it's easy to use an exaggerated adjective to compare injustice today to an injustice experienced at some other difficult period of human history. Now that the full DOJ report on Ferguson has been released, though, it's increasingly clear that the sick conflation of racism, the American profit-motive, and an abusive use of the criminal justice system were used to create a police state of historic proportions in this small Missouri town.---

NPR

Not just parking tickets, Ferguson averaged 567 non-traffic related court cases per 1,000 residents—far and away the highest of any town in the state and more than twice as much as the town with the second highest average. To put that into perspective, the city of St. Louis had 80 non-traffic court cases per 1,000 residents and that's actually above the state average for Missouri.

Daily Kos

The cops and members of the judicial system should be publicly horsewhipped before being fired...to set an example for the rest of the country.

Michael Brown's parents destroyed it by raising him to be that way.
