The main ceremony is primarily a recognition of those receiving their doctoral degrees, as well as those receiving special awards (e.g., university medalists with a 4.0 GPA). The commencement speaker also speaks at the main ceremony. The only recognition for graduating undergraduates is that they are asked to stand up and their degrees are conferred by acclamation. Those graduating with an undergraduate degree are not recognized individually.
The ceremony that most parents attend is the college-specific ceremonies, in which each graduate is called by name and permitted to walk across the stage to receive his or her diploma.

wow...sounds like things are quite a bit different than they were when I graduated...
