No install Microsoft Security essentials. It is free and light on the system resources.

Install ad block on your favorite browsers and you should be fine.

Thanks. I had put ADP on when I first got it. When I go to the Microsoft Security Essentials page it tells me that Windows Defender is "built in" to the latest Windows. I have Windows 8.1. Is that enough?

Microsoft Security Essentials isn't available for Windows 8/8.1. If you don't install any antivirus at all, Windows Defender is activated--Windows Defender is basically a built-in Microsoft Security Essentials. It is silent, though--you won't see anything until you run across an infected file.

This is "enough" for most tech-savvy people, but if you're not tech-savvy I would suggest installing a full paid antivirus program, like MalwareBytes Premium or Webroot SecureAnywhere.
