No install Microsoft Security essentials. It is free and light on the system resources.

Install ad block on your favorite browsers and you should be fine.

Thanks. I had put ADP on when I first got it. When I go to the Microsoft Security Essentials page it tells me that Windows Defender is "built in" to the latest Windows. I have Windows 8.1. Is that enough?

MSE has been rebranded as Windows Defender but this is what I do. Also, be sure you know how to restore from a backup. Actually walk through a dry run or two to be sure. Then you're pretty much covered.

I personally don't like McAfee, as others have already noted it is something of a resource hog.
