Females will usually train themselves. Males can take a little longer. After a couple of months, it's usually your fault in not noticing they wanted out.

Makes take days. You walk outside them and you piss. After the fifth or sixth time seeing you do it, they get it.
Females take forever. They are nasty as hell.
I consider a dog potty trained when they can be left to wander the house for 14-24 hours and won't take a piss. Hell, our dogs whine and Sprint to the door if they have to puke.

I've housetrained a male and a female and this is true. Both started as 7-8 week old puppies and the female had it very quickly. The male, God bless him, took months.
