I can understand an addiction to a hardcore drug, but really don't get the alcohol thing outside of just being weak minded. Sorry for being harsh.

Good luck to your friend. Maybe he needs to find a hobby or something productive to fill his time with that's hard to do with a hangover. I'd start there.
