Definitely go with a floating bug of some sort. We used to slay some bream with Miss Prissy's and other similar floating poppers. They're suckers for anything bug/critter-like wiggling on the surface
A fly rod is ideal but we did it as kids for many years with regular spinning rods. Watch for trees behind you when loading up that back cast
