Sure, I've gained a bunch of weight, but this is also what quitting smoking has allowed me to do:
1.) I've saved almost $25,000 (I was a heavy smoker) that I would have spent on cigarettes.
2.) It has allowed me to go on three "Vacations of a Lifetime" to the following cities: Italy--Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Ferrara, Verona; Germany--Munich, Dachau; Prague, Czech Republic; Bratislava, Solovakia; Budpest, Hungary; Vienna & Salzburg, Austria; and Melbourne, Sydney, & The Hunter Valley (Australia).
3.) My travels have introduced me to some great cultures and experiences. I got to see "The Birth of Venus" with my own eyes; I stood where Charlemagne is said to have been crowned Holy Roman Emperor; I saw-a da freakin-a Pope-a in person; Walked in Hitler's footsteps; and I hung around with Kangaroos, Wallabies, and a Wombat with a lousy disposition.
4.) My travels have introduced me to some amazing people with whom I am still in contact, and who I consider to be friends.
5.) I was able to purchase my first home because I'm not squandering $400 a month on cigarettes.
There are many reasons to quit smoking, but the FREAKING MONEY YOU SAVE has got to be near the top.
Here's to 5 more years smoke free. And five after that...

Good job. I quit in 2009. I gained 40lbs the six months after quitting but lost it 3 years ago.

Man, that great for you.
I smoke 8-12 a day and I have real trouble trying to leave them alone.

You were near a 3 pack a day habit?
Posted on 3/8/15 at 12:56 pm to LuckySo-n-So
holy hell, man!...kinda grabs your attention when you look at it from a dollar savings standpoint...

Congratulations to you. Smoking cigarettes is the dumbest thing that I do, but I cannot quit.
I wish I had calculated all the money I saved in the past 19 years by not drinking alcohol. I told all of my friends to dump their Dewars White Label stock a couple of weeks before I quit.

Congrats! You should have a smoke to celebrate

when someone around me is smoking, i greatly exaggerate a cough while covering my nose and mouth.

Been fighting a can and a half to two cans of Cope a day habit for years. I may try your idea of seeing tangible benefits and put a $10 spot a day into a bucket or some such,
Good on ya for quitting.

Congrats on the cessation.
"Trips of a Lifetime"- Dachau?
Really?
I'm kidding.
I made the "mistake" of going to Verdun and seeing the Ossurary.
I wasn't prepared for the scale of death there. It was not something a normal person can easily forget.
Frick Joe Camel I'm glad you got away from his clutching hooves.

I'm good with a pack a week. Definitely a nasty habit when I'm drinking some beers. I've never had the urge to smoke during the week or when I'm not drinking.

Can you share any affects it had on your taste and smell?

Quit the minute my first born was born. That was 20 years ago. I don't miss freezing my butt off standing on the porch to smoke in Winter. Such a bad habit.

Today makes 1 year for me.
Quit being a regular smoker years ago but always had to have a few while drinking or out with other smokers. Really cut back on the bar nights and which bars I go to - very rarely hang out in a smoky bar anymore. I actually lost weight along the way and am enjoying the surplus in income not throwing down $5 or $10 a night at the bar to smoke.

Congrats!
I quit 3 years ago. Wasn't hard to quit because I wanted to quit, unlike all those other times I "tried to quit." I'd be lying if I said I still don't get the urge every once in a blue moon, but the urges are nothing to deal with anymore. That said, if they told me the world were going to end in a week, I'd smoke again.
You're right about the taste and smell thing. So much better.
I didn't gain any weight when I quit, but I also started running a lot when I quit and I was mindful of my food cravings during the quitting process.
