Ten minutes before I saw this, I talked to retired city cop who mentioned that a house burned in his gated hood. I asked him how the fire dept got access to such hoods.
He and a retired state trooper both said that, when they worked, each hood provided the code to the fire dept, and the station had a book with all the codes. Firemen working in an area learned all the codes.
As posted above, some have alternative methods of entry as well.
