The sport model is one of the best values out there.
My buddy has run his Sport model in 2 carbine classes, shooting near 2000 rounds. 100% reliability on both trips, plus the second trip was all steel-cased ammo. The forward assist and dust cover aren't that necessary although I personally like having them.
It is an outstanding rifle. It's up to you if you want to spend the extra cash but it definitely isn't necessary.
