Plenty of kids grow up without a father and do fine, see yourself. Take your slam piece and go.

Seriously, I would talk to your ex about him going with you. Is she married, have other kids? That will play a big part into it.

However, I have joint custody of my kid and this would require me to move 3 hours away from him.
As it is now, I have him between 60-70% of the time. This wouldn't be possible if this plays out and I move. I would be limited to every other weekend, holidays, and some extended time during summer, maybe even the entire summer. He's 7 and we are very close.

Seriously, as a committed dad with joint custody of my kid I cannot even fathom how you even have a question to answer. It's a freaking job versus your son. If you are honestly debating this, you are not as good of a father as you think you are. Sorry if that hurts, but it's the truth.

This, she may give him up to be with you, she may not. You have to have that conversation though. Approach it honestly. You know better than us how she will react, but be honest about all off your concerns. It cannot hurt.
