I've always heard this, but there's definitely a difference in reaction. If I go home at lunch, my dog will be happy and jump on me.

If I pick him up or return after a week long vacation, he jumps on me repeatedly for several minutes and whines like a baby for a half hour on the way home.

How else do we explain the videos of the soldiers coming home to dogs where the dogs lose their shite for several minutes? That doesn't happen normally, I'm sure.

Heck, I can go to the street to check the mail and my dogs act like I've been gone for years when I come back in. Alternatively, I've come home from work before and they've been like... yeah, ok... whatever.
