How can I determine my termination costs for DirecTV, and can I avoid them?

I apologize in advance for possibly posting a question that’s been answered a hundred times before, but…

I have 18 months left on my DirecTV contract, and I want to cut the cord. I do not want to pay DirecTV $360 to cancel service. Actually, due to some personal issues, I can’t even afford $360 to cancel service.

I know Charter advertises (or at least did a few months ago) that they will buy out your contract and then allow you to sign up without signing a contract.

Could I use Charter to buy out my DirecTV contract and then turn around and cancel Charter free of charge? Or is there some fine print that states that if I do that, Charter charges me the DirecTV buyout?

Tell them this

EDIT to the OP -

I assumed I had 18 months left as I renegotiated my programming and costs 6 months ago. I just assumed it renewed then for two years.

But reading the specific wording of my customer agreement, there is no mention of the length of the contract. In fact, the contract was created in June of 2014, which is a few months before I called to renegotiate.

Here's the exact wording on the contract:

quote:

RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER AGREEMENT
Effective as of June 24, 2014, until replaced

So how can I determine how many months I have left on my contract?

Further, in the contract, it says something about having to pay back my credits. I have been really successful with my renegotiating tactics with them over the years. I think I have something like $90 worth of credits right now. Should I calculate this $90/month since 6 months ago into the termination fees?

They will definitely let you suspend your contract if you are still under contract

It may help you in the short term

You could tell them you're moving to an apt where satellites are not allowed

yes I believe that is covered in the "Don't be a piece of shite" clause.
