The heavy duty drop in plastc liners protect against dents.

Yes they do, but I'm not personally a fan of them, and dents don't bother me as much as rust. I've had a drop-in on one truck when I bought it sand, dirt, mud, blood (or worse battery acid) will get under them and it's impossible to get it all out. The tiedowns are usually harder to access from the cutouts too. You can get a rubber mat to put on top of the liner to prevent your stuff from sliding around though but usually requires some trimming.
